Palm Removal Gold Coast

Palms are heavier and more awkward than they look, and they are the most common cause of amateur tree injuries on the Coast. We take them down in controlled sections, clear the fronds and grind the base out.

Heavier than they look

A palm is not a small job.

There are no branches to rig from, the trunk holds an enormous amount of water weight, and the fronds are edged like a saw. Every section has to be controlled on the way down, which is why we work most palms from the lift rather than climbing them.

  • Cocos, Alexander, Bangalow, Foxtail, Golden Cane and date palms
  • Full removal, or frond and seed pod clearing on healthy palms
  • Sectional lowering so nothing lands on the pool, deck or fence
  • Trunk, fronds and seed heads chipped or carted off the same day
  • Base ground out level so you can turf or plant straight over it
When to deal with it

Palms give you plenty of warning.

If any of these are happening, it is worth a look before storm season rather than after.

  1. 01
    Fronds are dropping

Dead fronds hanging in the crown will eventually come down, and they are heavy enough to hurt someone.

  2. 02
    Seed pods everywhere

Fruit staining paths, blocking gutters and spreading seedlings through your garden beds and the reserve next door.

  3. 03
It is too close to the house

Palm roots and trunk flare against slabs, pool shells, retaining walls and pipes.

  4. 04
    It is dying back

Yellowing crown, soft trunk or a spear rot at the top. Once the growing point is gone, a palm does not recover.

Palm removal questions

The ones we get every week.

Particularly the cocos palm question, which comes up on almost every quote south of the river.

Why do palms cost more than they look like they should?
Weight. A palm trunk is dense and wet, and there is no branch structure to rig off, so every section has to be lowered on ropes or taken by the lift. A 10 metre cocos palm can put several tonnes on the ground in sections. It is a slower, heavier job than a broadleaf tree of the same height.
Can you just trim the fronds instead?
Yes, and for healthy palms that is usually the better call. We take the dead fronds and the seed pods, which is what causes most of the mess and most of the danger of something dropping onto a car or a person below.
Are cocos palms a problem on the Gold Coast?
Cocos palms are widely regarded as an environmental weed in South East Queensland. The fruit spreads readily via flying foxes and birds into bushland. Many owners remove them for that reason alone, and some councils treat them differently from protected native vegetation.
Do palms need a council permit?
It depends on the species, the height and whether the palm sits within a protected vegetation area. Some palms are exempt as pest species. We check it against the Gold Coast City Plan for you before we quote.
Will the stump regrow?
No. Palms do not sucker from the stump the way many trees do. Grinding is still worth it to remove the trip hazard and get the ground level back.

Most Gold Coast jobs turn into two or three jobs once the crew and the gear are already in your driveway. Doing it in one visit is always cheaper.
